There is nothing more classic than an Old Fashioned. The worlds most popular cocktail, it is a great go-to for all occasions. Here is the really simple recipe to try making it at home.

  2. Put the sugar cube and water in into the glass and swirl to dissolve

  3. Splash in 2 very light dashes of angostura bitters

  4. Add ice

  5. Pour in jigger of bourbon

  6. Stir and garnish with an orange peel

  7. Enjoy!

Tips & Tricks

  • If you have simple syrup, that can substitute for the sugar and water. Just use 1 tsp of that.

  • Instead of muddling your orange inside the glass, you could use 1/2 tsp of Grand Marnier for a citrus flavor. Or Angostura also makes orange bitters.

  • Angostura are the classic bitters for this cocktail, but if you find them too bitter, Peychaud bitters are also very nice and more fruity

  • A higher proof bourbon will draw out more complex flavors in the drink

  • Alternatively, some people really like an Old Fashioned with rye whiskey instead of bourbon. It's not the classic, but we think it's pretty tasty too

  • There is a heated debate in the bourbon world over rather or not to add a cherry to an Old Fashioned. We say whatever makes you happy.

  • Milwaukee claims to be the home of the Old Fashioned, and there they add a splash of club soda. If you do, definitely use a higher proof bourbon, and give it an extra stir to mix the flavors together.
